Salem, the state capital of Oregon, is home to the Oregon State Hospital, a public mental hospital in the state of Oregon, which constructed a smaller satellite campus in Junction City in 2014. The hospital's main campus may be found in downtown Salem. It was established in 1862, and in 1883, it was built according to the Kirkbride Plan. Today, it is the oldest continuously functioning psychiatric hospital in the state of Oregon, as well as one of the oldest continually operating hospitals on the West Coast.

Following the closure of the Oregon Institution for the Insane in Portland, which was located 47 miles (76 km) to the north of Salem, the establishment of this hospital became necessary. Electroconvulsive therapy, lobotomies, eugenics, and hydrotherapy were some of the treatments that were offered at the Oregon State Hospital when it was still known by its previous name, the Oregon Hospital for the Insane. During the middle of the twentieth century, the institution was plagued by serious overcrowding issues, reaching a peak population of almost 3,600 patients. The overpopulation problems at the hospital were helped to some extent by the opening, in 1961, of Dammasch State Hospital in Clackamas County, which is close to Portland. The year 1995 would mark the end of Dammasch.
